T&T’s men’s and women’s teams made strong starts at the Rugby America North 7s Championship at St Mary’s College Ground, Serpentine Road, St Clair yesterday, with the men’s topping their group and the women unbeaten to date at the group stage.
Playing just two matches in their group, the T&T men cruised to today’s quarter-finals after beating St Vincent and the Grenadines 52-0 in their opener before getting the better of Mexico 12-10, results that puts them up against Bermuda in today’s quarter-final encounter at 9 am. Victory for the T&T men will see them advancing to the semis where they will face the winner of Barbados and Guyana.
Men’s coach Larry Mendez said he confident his charges will reach far in the tournament and called on them to remain discipline for the next 12 hours. He told the the Trinidad Guardian that should qualify for the final, they will earn automatic qualification to the Hong Kong 7s in March next year, as well as imoprove their rankings in the Commonwealth region.
Meanwhile the women also played unbeatebn yesterday, defeating Guyana 14-0 in their first game and whipping Dominica Republic 17-0 in game two. The T&T women later clobbered Bahamas 24-7 in game three and will at 9:00am today face Mexico in their final group match to determine the group winner.
Based on their results the T&T women have alread qualified for the semifinal round and are confident they can go all the way to the title for the first time. (WA)
