LIMA, PERU (September 06, 2018) - The Panam Sports General Assembly held an open election to fill the three vacancies on the Association of National Olympic Committees Executive Council to conclude the first day of the Assembly in Lima, Peru.
Six candidates sought to become new members of the ANOC Executive Council, including Camilo Perez, Tricia Smith, Ruperto Herrera, Henry Nuñez, Alfred Emmanuel and Judy Simons, while Keith Joseph and Sara Rosario sought re-election to ANOC’s governing body.
With each ballot read aloud and real-time vote counting, Panam Sports ensured complete transparency throughout each round of voting.
In order to be elected, candidates needed a simple majority of the 41 nations of Panam Sports, with each National Olympic Committee receiving one ballot to cast votes for the three vacancies on the Council.
Paraguayan Olympic Committee President Camilo Perez was the first candidate elected to the ANOC Executive Council in the opening round of voting, earning support from 28 of the 41 NOCs of Panam Sports.
With one vacancy filled, delegates were then told to vote for two candidates in the second round, as Perez and Judy Simons were taken off the ballot. However, none of the remaining six candidates were able to achieve the required 21 votes. Ruperto Herrera was taken off the ballot after receiving the lowest amount of votes in round two.
In the third and final round of voting, Canadian Olympic Committee President, Tricia Smith, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee Secretary General, Keith Joseph, earned 24 and 21 votes respectively. With the support of the majority of the Assembly, Smith and Joseph were elected to fill the final two positions available on the ANOC Executive Council.
Panam Sports is proud to have three more exemplary representatives on the ANOC Executive Council and would like to congratulate Camilo Perez, Tricia Smith and Keith Joseph for their election to such an important international sporting organization.
